Samoa praised as a leader in global weightlifting development

Apia, SAMOA – 25 April 2026: As Samoa hosts the Universal Weightlifting Cup 2026 that opened last Saturday evening, it remains a huge sporting international event with athletes from 70 countries to compete in the Oceania and Commonwealth Championship all wrapped in one.
All teams and officials were welcomed by the Acting Prime Minister, Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molio’o at the opening ceremony at Gym One of the Tuanaimato Sports Complex.
A world-class competition
The General Secretary of the Oceania & Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation, Paul Coffa said that only Samoa can have such an incredible sporting atmosphere.
He said the leadership shown by Samoa has established and sustained a world class sporting facility and as a leader in global weightlifting development.
“There is no other continent that has been able to match Samoa and Oceania’s dedication to establishing and maintaining such world-class facilities,” he said.
He acknowledged the proud and great work by Samoa Weightlifting Federation President Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork who continues to raise the standard of weightlifting at all levels.
“We appreciate the Samoan Government’s support and vision for making it possible to put on this world class event,” said Coffa.
Opening the global sporting event, Acting Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioo said while winning is on every team’s plate, she however encouraged them to play with honour, integrity and respect.

“You are the heart of this event, you have trained with discipline, made sacrifices and travelled great distances to be here and you compete over the coming days, you carry not only your national pride but also the spirit of unity and friendship that defines this competition,” said Mulipola.
With the pride of a nation hosting such a prestigious event for the first time in the Pacific, Mulipola acknowledged the vision and leadership of the national Weightlifting Federation.
“Your dedication strengthens our sporting ecosystem, builds resilient communities and inspire our young people,” she said.
She said that hosting the event is not only a milestone for Samoa or a celebration of strength or sporting excellence, but a powerful demonstration of Samoa’s capability and readiness to host international sporting events of the highest standard.
She also said the event reflects the Government’s priority given to sports as a driver of national development.

President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, expressed pride in welcoming participants from across Oceania, Asia, and Europe.
He said that Samoa holds a deep love for weightlifting and “it is a privilege to share our culture, hospitality, and passion for sport with the world.”
Tuaopepe also highlighted Samoa’s role as the host of the Oceania Weightlifting Institute and Academy, which is a testament to the nation’s commitment to excellence.
The event was marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting conducted by Mulipola, Coffa, and Tuaopepe to officially inaugurate the tournament.
The opening culminated in a vibrant cultural performance by the Saoluafata EFKS youth group and Siva Afi Fire Dancers, showcasing Samoa’s rich traditions and welcoming spirit.
