Tongan-Samoa community humbled by Kings visit

Apia, SAMOA – 31 May 2026: It may have been a brief meeting but the Tongan community in Samoa were humbled and excited to meet His Majesty King Tupou VI at a special gathering at the Sheraton Hotel yesterday evening.

The meeting started with formalities before the presentation of gifts by the local Tongan community to his Majesty.

His Majesty then addressed the gathering.

The whole ceremony was conducted in the Tongan language and Talamua spoke with Alipato Tavo, the President of the Tongan Samoan community who translated His Majesty’s message to the community.

“He was giving guidance and encouragement to the Tongans who are working in Samoa and to the students attending the University of the South Pacific (USP) at Alafua.

Tavo said that anytime a person of high calibre visits Samoa, the Tongan community come together and present a traditional welcome.

He said the Samoan gifts presented to Hus Majesty the King was to show their deep appreciation for accepting their request for a meeting.

Every family was introduced to him and he spoke with them, laughed with them then in a lighter mood invited them to take photos for their Facebook pages before leaving.

His Majesty was in Samoa as Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific and presided at the graduation at the Football Stadium at Apia Park last Friday.

Also present at the meeting was Tonga’s Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua and good lady Fane who are guests in Samoa’s 64 Independence celebrations.

He stayed with the community after the King left and also gave encouragement to the community.

“Stay in school, in church and stay away from drugs,” he said.

The King left Samoa on Sunday 31st May.
