Savaii family mourns loss of son working under RSE in New Zealand

Apia, SAMOA – 9 June 2026: A family at Faasaleleaga 4 in Savaii is mourning the loss of a son who was working in New Zealand under the seasonal workers program but died in an accident in the weekend.

The family was informed of the tragedy that ended the life of their son last Saturday.

Reports from New Zealand said the young man fell from the high rocks into the Muriwai River and was swept away by the current and his body was later found.

A relative of the deceased said the young man visited his grandmother and family during the festive season last year and returned to continue his employment in New Zealand early this year.

She said the young man bought a car for his family during that trip before returning to work and the death of her cousin has taken a heavy toll on the family, especially the grandmother who raised him.

She said the family is waiting for a full report of the incident and when his body will be returned home.
