New K9 Unit at Faleolo Airport to Strengthen Border Security

Apia, SAMOA – 7 August 2026 – The Samoa Police has opened a new K9 unit at Faleolo International Airport that will play a vital role in airport operations and enhancing the country’s border security efforts.
The facility was funded with support from the Australian Government, and the opening was attended by Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt and Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Will Robinson.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the new facility aligns with the government’s goal of strengthening border protection and improving national security.
He explained that the dedicated facility will support the specialized duties of the K9 Unit at the airport, separate from the main police outpost at Faleolo.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the new K9 unit will improve the detection of illegal drugs and restricted items, helping officers respond more effectively to border security threats.
He also expressed hope that the partnership between Samoa and Australia will continue to grow, bringing greater security and progress to the region.
