Samoa Launches Mobile Makespace to Strengthen Disaster Preparedness
Apia, Samoa – 14 October 2026 – The Government of Samoa, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), today launched the Mobile Makespace, an innovative mobile engineering workshop designed to strengthen national disaster preparedness, enhance emergency response and support the restoration of essential services following disasters.
The launch was held at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) compound in Tuana’imato, officiated by the Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, Hon. Ale Vena Ale, in partnership with Field Ready and the Pacific Community (SPC).
In his keynote address, Ale Vena Ale emphasised the importance of local innovation and community resilience, stating, “Resilience begins at the local level. This mobile is an investment in local capability, local innovation, and most importantly, our people.”
Developed by Field Ready, the trailer-mounted facility is equipped with power tools, 3D printers, plastic welders and an independent power supply, enabling trained technicians to manufacture replacement parts and undertake urgent repairs in disaster-affected areas.
Beyond emergency response, it will support technical training, innovation and capacity development for local engineers, technicians and community members.
The initiative also promotes Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), encouraging opportunities for women and persons with disabilities to participate in technical training and disaster resilience activities.

The Director of Field Ready in the Pacific Region, Mr. Luke Johnston also highlighted the value of international cooperation in strengthening disaster resilience across the Pacific, stating, “Disaster resilience is strengthened when countries work together and communities have access to the tools, knowledge and skills needed to respond to emergencies.”
The launch coincided with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, reinforcing the importance of translating preparedness commitments into practical action highlighting that resilience starts at home.
“By putting the makerspace on wheels, we are taking the tools of safety, creativity and preparation directly into the heart of our community and homes,” said Ale Vena Ale.
The Minister acknowledged Field Ready and SPC for their contributions to strengthening Samoa’s disaster risk reduction, preparedness and response capabilities.
