Apia, SAMOA – 22 April 2026: Thirty-four-year-old Jack Olaf Lafoa’i of Utualii and Fatitū, Saleimoa created the winning Logo for the 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations that was launched today by the Acting Prime Minister, Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molio’o.

Also launched is this year’s independence anniversary theme: “Samoa United For a New Beginning.”

The competition was opened to the public with a $3,000 tala prize money and the winning entry was selected from eleven entries received by the Independence Celebrations Organising Committee chaired by the Prime Minister.

In her remarks, Mulipola highlighted the symbol’s representation of Samoa’s historical voyage, depicted by a sail from a traditional canoe that signifies the nation’s maritime expeditions across vast oceans to reach its current shores.

She also noted that the colours used are reflective of Samoa’s national flag and symbolize patriotism and unity.

Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o explained what the logo symbolises.

Description of the logo:

  1. It reflects Samoa’s journey, symbolised by the sail of a canoe, a voyage that has travelled thousands of miles across the ocean and has reached the shores of Samoa, a blessed nation founded on true Christian faith and values.
  2. The colours used: Red, White and Blue represent those of our national flag.
  3. The tanoa (kava bowl), ipu tau‘ava (cup), fue (fly whisk), and to‘oto‘o (staff) symbolise authentic Samoan culture.
  4. The design also presents the traditional Samoan tattoo of the soga‘imiti and the malu. The black colour incorporated represents the ink or dignity of our traditional tattoo and the visible identity of Samoa’s cherished cultural heritage.

“Samoa’s journey throughout the years since 1962 reminds us that, had we not sailed with faith in God, placing all our hopes in Him to guide our path, we would not have reached this 64th year,” said Mulipola.

“As we continue our journey into the future, let us remain united, trusting only in God to lead Samoa and its Government toward prosperity and security.”

The logo is the property of the Government of Samoa and has officially been registered.
