“Boxing is one of our legacy games, the sport has been in Samoa for many years,” he stated acknowledging the role Marist played in the development of boxing locally and the results it produced over the years
The Prime Minister acknowledged the renowned Samoan boxers like To’aletai David Tua who is now assisting the Samoan Boxing Teams and Jai Opetaia, who have shown the world the talent and sportsmanship of Samoan athletes.
He praised their achievements and the positive example they set for young athletes.
President of Independent Boxing Incorporated Tavu’i Mike Lemisio emphasized that the club’s annual event, the Marist Sport Week International, continues to grow.
“This year, the focus is on grassroots development. Notably, To’aletai David Tua, now coaching young fighters aged 5 to 16, is helping nurture the next generation of boxers,” he said.
Tavui also emphasized that many competitors in tomorrow’s matches are juniors and youths, showcasing the club’s commitment to developing young talent.
“Today’s event features seven exciting bouts between Marist fighters and the Palmerston North Snapback team from New Zealand. Additionally, eight local opponents, aged between 9 and 16 years old, will participate in the competition.” Tavui stated.

The matches serve as a way to assess the skills and progress of young fighters, focusing on their basic boxing techniques.
The event also aims to raise funds to support the growth of the boxing club and provide opportunities for Samoa’s youth to compete internationally.
