END OF AN ERA: Emotional Farewell for Justice Nelsons Final Sitting
By Lagi Keresoma/
Apia, Samoa – 24 June 2026 – The Supreme Court of Samoa witnessed the end of an era as the final curtain fell on a long serving member of the Judiciary.
In what was a routine court sitting, the final appearance of Supreme Court Senior Justice Vui Clarence Nelson carried a significance far beyond the ordinary business of the Court.
The courtroom was filled not only with lawyers and judicial officers, but with decades of legal history, public service, and the enduring commitment of one of Samoa’s most recognisable guardians of the rule of law.
There were no grand ceremonies, no elaborate speeches but just the familiar setting of the Supreme Court, a place that had been an integral part of Justice Nelson’s professional life for almost three decades.
Yet the emotions in the courtroom spoke louder than any formal tribute.

Lawyers from across the profession gathered to witness the occasion, including Attorney General Mauga Precious Chang, reflecting the respect afforded to a jurist whose career has left an indelible mark on Samoa’s legal landscape.
“For many present, it was difficult to imagine the Supreme Court without Justice Nelson occupying his customary place on the Bench,” said Mauga.
Generations of lawyers have appeared before him, and countless litigants have had their disputes heard and determined under his stewardship.
She said through changing Governments, evolving laws, and some of the nations most significant legal disputes, Justice Nelson remained a constant presence in the administration of justice.

However, his judicial journey was not without challenges.
She said like many long-serving judges, he presided over difficult and sometimes controversial matters, yet colleagues and practitioners alike acknowledge him as a jurist whose decisions were guided by a genuine commitment to fairness, justice, and service to Samoa.
“He was often regarded as a complex figure, principled, independent, and deeply invested in the integrity of the judicial process,” she said.
The Attorney General said the farewell was not simply the retirement of a Judge, but it marks the closing chapter of a career dedicated to upholding the Constitution, protecting the rule of law, and maintaining public confidence in Samoa’s courts.

As proceedings concluded and the final sitting came to an end, there was a palpable sense that something significant had passed into history.
“The familiar routine of court appearances, legal arguments, and judicial deliberations that had defined so much of Justice Nelson’s life had reached its conclusion,” said Mauga.
For the legal profession, it was a moment of reflection. For the judiciary, it was the departure of a senior colleague. For Samoa, it was the retirement of one of the nation’s longest-serving guardians of justice.

“The courtroom will continue its work tomorrow, new cases will be called, new judgments will be delivered. The wheels of justice will continue to turn but today belongs to Honourable Justice Vui Clarence Nelson. A distinguished judicial career has come to its end, but the legacy remains,” said Mauga,
And for those who were present in the Supreme Court today, it was a privilege to witness the final sitting of a man who dedicated much of his life to the service of justice and the people of Samoa.
