Apia, Samoa – 17 November 2025 – The Minister of Finance has corrected the Leader of the Opposition, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi’s claims regarding the pension increase for the elderly.

The Opposition Leader has claimed that the pension “has not increased” and that pensioners—including himself—“have not seen any change.”

“These statements are misleading and ignore what is clearly stated in the 2025/2026 Budget Address,” said Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo in a press statement.

1. Pension Increase Begins in November 2025 – Exactly as Announced
The Minister said that in the Budget Address 2025/2026, tabled in Parliament and publicly released, states clearly that:
* The increased pension rate will commence in November 2025.
* An additional increase for senior citizens aged 70 and above will begin in the next fiscal year (2026/2027).

These timelines were fully disclosed, debated in Parliament, published publicly, and widely communicated through the Budget Press Conference.

“Therefore, it is incorrect to claim that the pensions should already have increased,” the Minister said.

“The effective date has not yet arrived, and Government is on track to implement the increase exactly as approved by Parliament.”

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting the Elderly
The decision to schedule the pension increase from November 2025 was part of a responsible fiscal strategy that ensures:
* Budget sustainability
* Smooth rollout across all pension categories
* Additional targeted support for those above 70, who will receive a further uplift next fiscal year

The Government remains fully committed to honouring these commitments to our senior citizens.

Political Point-Scoring Helps No One
While public debate and scrutiny are important, the Government encourages leaders—especially former Prime Ministers—to refer to official facts before making public accusations that may mislead the elderly and create unnecessary anxiety.

At a time when many families face rising costs of living, it is important that national leaders avoid politicising support measures and instead focus on constructive solutions.

In a direct message to all senior Pensioners, Mulipola emphasized that:
* Your pension increase is confirmed.
* It begins in November 2025, as stated clearly in the Budget Address.
* Another increase for those aged 70+ will follow in the next fiscal year.

“No one has been forgotten. The Government values your contribution to Samoa and remains committed to supporting your wellbeing,” she stated.

If a date is stated for example, 15 of November the pensioner increase of $300 will be paid to all pensions. Instead of just said it will increase in November but no exact date. In my view that was the reason why Tuilaepa made angry remarks on the media. And maybe many more people were wondering when they will receive their $300 but didn’t make any comment like Tuilaepa. As you all know that’s Tuilaepa nature, he likes stirring up troubles or differences among peoples and to score some political points. It’s not worth it.
