“Returning to the people is not a sign of weakness, but of respect for democracy and for the voice of the electorate.” – Taioali’iseu Fiti Aimaasu.
Apia, SAMOA – 5 March 2026: The Member of Parliament for Vaimauga 3, Taioaliiseu Fiti Aimaasu has responded to criticisms about his decision to resign from HRPP.
Yesterday, Taiaoaliiseu tendered his resignation with the Speaker of Parliament, Auapaau Mulipola Aloitafuua and will be officially recognised when parliament meets next Tuesday.
His resignation means a by-election, and he intends to contest the seat under the Faatuatua I le Atua Samoa ua Tasi Party.
“This decision was not made lightly, nor was it driven by anger, bitterness, or disrespect,” Taioaliiseu told Talamua.
He said he remains grateful to HRPP, its leadership and its supporters for the opportunities and relationships formed over many years.
In a statement delivered to the constituent, Taioali’iseu described the decision as the most difficult of his political life and one made after months of extensive consultations across the district, deep personal reflection, prayer and discussions with his family.
He confirmed that feedback gathered during visits throughout Vaimauga 3 demonstrated strong support for the current FAST Government.
Pressure from HRPP to step down from Fonofaavae
He stated that recent internal HRPP party developments including a request for him to step down from leadership responsibilities within the Fonofa’avae, is a contributing factor to his decision to resign.
“The pressure raised serious concerns about my ability to continue advocating effectively for the people of Vaimauga 3,” he said.
He said the only honourable course of action was to return the mandate to the people.
“In a democracy, leadership must rest on the confidence of the majority,” he said.
“Returning to the people is not a sign of weakness, but of respect for democracy and for the voice of the electorate.”
Not a betrayal
Taioaliiseu acknowledged the support of HRPP and that his resignation is grounded in political integrity rather than political survival, and that the by-election will allow voters to decide clearly who should represent Vaimauga 3 in Parliament.
“To HRPP supporters, I ask that this decision not be seen as betrayal, but as a matter of conscience,” he said.
“To FAST supporters, I offer myself humbly – committed to listening, unity, and service. And to all the people of Vaimauga 3, regardless of past votes, I remain your servant first.”
He concluded by reaffirming his faith and trust in God and in the democratic process, stating that he will accept the outcome of the by-election with humility and respect.
“Let the voters decide. Let democracy speak. May God continue to bless Vaimauga 3 and our beloved Samoa.”
