Apia, SAMOA -16 June 2026 – Samoa is hosting this week a gathering of education leaders from across the Pacific marking the first time such a conference has taken place in Samoa.
It is also the first gathering of the Core Executive of the Pacific Education Council meeting in Samoa.
In opening the meeting, Prime Minister, La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, emphasized the importance of investing in teachers as the country continues to face the shortage of teachers over the years.
“The investment in teachers is not just an education expense; it is a national investment,” he said.
He shared Samoa’s plans to support the development of teachers and strengthen the education sector.

The government has announced several initiatives aimed at improving the teaching profession.
- Samoa has allocated land for the Samoa National Teachers Association to establish a future headquarters.
- The government is working with development partners to enhance the capacity of the teacher workforce, especially by improving students’ numeracy and literacy pass rates.
- Samoa is strengthening the career pathways for teachers. The National University of Samoa will sponsor students who undertake teacher training programs, providing more opportunities for aspiring educators.
- The government recognizes the valuable experience of retired teachers and educators, encouraging their continued contribution through mentorship and advisory roles.
- Samoa introduced an innovative Teacher AID Program. This initiative recruits and trains mothers and community members to support education at the grassroots level.
- In collaboration with the Public Service Commission, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the National Teacher Council, and the Samoa National Teachers Association, the government is working on a new career structure for teachers.
This approach aims to create clearer career paths and professional growth opportunities.
La’auli explained that this comprehensive effort reflects a whole-system approach to strengthening the teaching workforce.
“It focuses on recruiting new teachers, supporting experienced educators, and providing multiple pathways into the profession.” he said
The Prime Minister highlighted the broader importance of education, stating, “Education is not just about preparing students for exams; it is the foundation for building a nation.”
The three-day meeting is bringing together education leaders and officials from across the Pacific region, including Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
The gathering aims to foster collaboration and share strategies to improve education systems not only in Samoa but throughout the Pacific.
