Apia, Samoa – 22 September 2025: The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) is working in partnership with the Government of Canada (Canada Fund), in conducting awareness and community education activities for village communities and secondary school students in Savai’i this week on the threat of drug abuse in the fight against violence.

The rise in child abuse and gender-based violence, especially cases involving violence against women linked to illegal drugs has prompted SVSG to share vital information and raise awareness among families and villages.

The longstanding partnership between SVSG and the Canadian Government, through Canadian Funds, has supported and funded this project in Samoa.

The initial training sessions were conducted for SVSG staff before expanding the program to the wider community. Outreach awareness activities are planned for 10 districts and 10 schools selected from both Upolu and Savai’i.

Given the risks of drug abuse among youth and students, SVSG is also targeting secondary schools with specialized programs.

The awareness sessions focus on the links between drug abuse, violence, and mental health issues. Additionally, the sessions include therapies to promote health and well-being, such as improving nutrition through the development of nutritious gardens.

SVSG President, Siliniu Lina Chang, has confirmed the continuation of this awareness project in Upolu districts and secondary schools next week.

She emphasized the importance of empowering community members, both young and old, to take the risks and threats of drug addiction seriously in our families and communities.

SVSG and its partners continue to raise awareness on this critical issue, inviting all individuals and groups to join the movement and address drug abuse as a serious threat to the mission of maintaining a safer Samoa.
